Learning from Failure:
You have not failed until you quit trying.
LF.1 Neurons and Brain Learning Foundations:Students are able to describe how the development of neuronal pathways leads to learning and skill development. |
How we learn
An introduction to the idea of neurons and how our brain learns and helps us get better at things through practicing and strengthening neuronal connections.
Learning as a maze
Building better understanding of brain learning and neuronal connections through the metaphor of learning how to navigate a maze and creating an easier neuronal pathway through the brain.
Neurons Review
For students who have already learned a little about neurons, this presentation how neurons work, using the "Pass the Message" game as a model.
Creating a Learning Pathway
Creating a new learning pathway (and overcoming a bad habit) is similar to carving a brand-new pathway into a jungle - and just as hard (if not harder).
|
LF.2 Identifying past examples of successful persistence:Students are able to identify successes from their past that necessitated persistence and describe what caused them to persist. |
You are a Superhero
Persisting through pain, boredom, and frustration is necessary for success. This presentation introduces the concept of persistence while helping students reflect on the times when they have already demonstrated persistence.
Planning A trip
Coming up with a good plan to achieve a goal is similar to planning for a trip - you have to think through where you're going, the possible obstacles to getting there, and how to overcome those obstacles so you don't get stuck.
|
LF.3 "Talking Up" -Accountable self-talk for persistence:Students are able to demonstrate the use of “accountable self-talk” stems and internal messages to help them persist in the face of struggle. |
PLT Touchstones: Talking Up
Students learn to use language that builds themselves and others up so that everyone grows.
Talking Yourself Up
Using a technique proven to help Navy SEALS persist at the hardest of times , this presentation helps us get through the feeling that our pain is going to be everlasting. Instead this presentation teaches students how to ask whether your problem is Permanent, Universal, or Personal.
Finding and Giving support for Growth
The hardest part about learning and growing is persisting through frustration and those times when we get "stuck." This presentation walks through simple steps for asking for help and support, as well as how to give support when somebody is struggling.
(linked to Self-reflection) Growth Mindset for SBAC
This presentation helps students prepare for SBAC testing by going over what "adaptive" means in a test (it should be challenging if you are doing well) and reviewing some strategies for increasing persistence to help during the test.
(can be applied to any adaptive testing) |
LF.4 Persistence and the phases of practice:Students are able to describe the different phases of practice and when persistence is most necessary for successful practice. |
The Word SCramble Test
This activity walks students through a demonstration of how "Learned Helplessness" is induced and works - through a short "Word-Scramble Test."
The word Scramble Persistence Challenge
When things get hard and we feel like quitting, we need persistence to push through and keep trying. This activity starts the process of reflecting on what kinds of situations cause us to want to quit.
The Phases of Practice
Practice makes permanent. To prepare ourselves for understanding how to practice well, we need to understand the different "Phases of Practice" and when practice gets harder and we're more likely to quit.
(linked to Deliberate Practice for Growth) Practice: Time and Place
For students to create the most effective Practice Plans, they need to consider the last big piece - choosing the best time and place for practicing their specific skill. This presentation walks them through this process.

LF.5 Neurons and Brain Learning Memory:Students are able to describe how neuronal connections are leveraged for the intentional access of memories and other information. |
Stream of Consciousness Mapping
Mapping out our thoughts can be a helpful tool to better understanding our connections and perspectives.
Memory: Making Connections
Making a “Memory Map” can help us figure out where we need to invest our energy when learning something new.
