SEL is not just about sitting in circles and talking about feelings - there is now quite a bit of research demonstrating the positive academic achievement outcomes that result from the implementation of strong SEL programming in schools.  PLT is designed with academic achievement and increased critical problem-solving and metacognitive skills as a specific goal.
